The 1887 pattern two pound and five pound coins were originally struck to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria on the 20th of June 1887. While the Royal Mint London produced many thousands of both denominations, the Sydney branch of the Royal Mint produced a very small number of each denoted by an S on the exergue line above the date.

It is possible that production continued up until to the closure of the Sydney mint (MacDonald, G, 2013) , although a total of only 11 coins have surfaced to date.
