The final run of sovereigns minted at Australian mints were struck from 1929 to 1931 at the Melbourne and Perth mints, the Sydney mint had already closed in 1926. This type is distinguished by a smaller bust and an even, thick rim. Each mint struck sovereigns in each year; however, the Melbourne mint sovereigns tended to be struck in small quantities. Still, as sovereigns had already ceased to be used in general circulation, they tend to be in upper grades and often in mint state . As sovereigns were generally used as a means of trade and wealth storage by European banks, by this period most of the wear done to these sovereigns were excessive bagmarks from the rough and prolonged bagging procedures by the European banks. Although this tends not to preclude mint state gradings, it does preclude the higher mint state gradings leaving the average grade of MS62 and MS63 for the Melbourne and Perth mint issues respectively.
