By 1921 designs for the new square nickel composed Half Penny had already been heavily developed. It was a substantial struggle for the coin authorities to find a Kookaburra design that adequately depicted the noble animal. When finally happy the issue shifted to the obverse portrait which struggled to fit within the small coin without feeling cramped. Despite bills being drafted to introduce the new coins the designs were never full accepted and the project was suspended and eventually discarded. (Barrier Miner, 1920)
