In 1951 the Royal Mint in London produced 18,000,000 Pennies for Australia. In the same year the Melbourne Mint produced a further 21,240,000 pieces and the Perth Mint an additional 12,888,000. The London variety can also be distinguished form the other varieties by a small 'PL' mint-mark located along the rim to the right of the denomination 'PENNY.' PL is an abbreviation of pecunia londinii (money of London) or percussa londinio (struck at London).
