1945 Pattern One Penny

In 1945, Australia's pennies were intended to be produced solely at the Perth mint but when the Melbourne mint prepared the dies it became clear that the 1937 master dies were worn beyond any usefulness and new dies were prepared dated 1945 (Sterling & Currency, 2009) . Four proof strikes were prepared by the Melbourne mint before working dies were shipped to Perth. The Melbourne mint retained all 4 coins which were later transferred to the Museum of Victoria. In July, 1988 the Museum of Victoria released one example for sale which appeared again at auction in November 2006 (Sterling & Currency, 2009) . In 2009 a second example was released by the museum which sold at Noble Numismatics Sale 91 realizing just shy of $250,000 (Noble Numismatics, 2009) . This issue is distinguished from the Perth mint business strikeand proof strike by the absence of dot mintmark after the Y of PENNY on the reverse.
