What is my coin worth?

A coin's value comes down to two factors:

Some coins can be valuable because they're in a very high grade, others because the coin is inherently rare, while most highly valuable coins are both. For example:

A 1966 fifty cent is a very common coin which is generally only worth around $30 because of its silver content. As the grade goes up, they get expontentially rarer with just 3 graded MS67 and none finer. A piece graded MS68 would easily fetch over $5000.

The 1930 penny is an inherently rare coin. With a mintage of around 3,000 pieces, it is rare regardless of its condition and starts at about $5000 for a damaged and worn example.

On the other hand, the finest certified 1930 penny grades AU50. If an example were to grade just a single grade finer it would easily fetch over $100,000.
